    Stereo/Speaker Question

I'm planning to reinstall the original stereo in my '72 and I have a concern about speaker impedance. There is a label on the stereo that says that its designed for use with 10ohm speakers however the aftermarket speakers that are in the car are rated at 4ohms.

Would I be risking damage to the stereo by connecting it to 4ohm speakers? If so, can anyone suggest where I could get a pair of 10ohm dash speakers?

    Scott.

You will ruin the radio with 4ohm speakers. Delco 10ohm speakers were still available last I heard.

      Re: Stereo/Speaker Question

      Hi Scott,

Another choice is to find an original 10 ohm pair and have them re-coned as I did. I found a pair on ebay for ten bucks and sent them out. They came back like new and they sound as good as these speakers can be.

Thanks for the help guys, glad I asked. I'll keep an eye out for an original pair. As a backup plan I just found some online that should work too.

          Scott------

GM #15173232 will do you perfectly. These are not a real high quality speaker like an aftermarket-type unit. However, they are about equivalent to the originals and they are new.

Thanks Joe. I found some online last night that might work and they're dirt cheap. I'll hold onto the part# that you suggested in case these ones don't work out. They're GM#16157512 - Delco 4x6 10 ohm.

Thanks again for all the help.
            Scott.

              Scott-----

The GM #16157512 speakers were never catalogued by GM for a Corvette application. However, if they are the correct size and impedance rating, they ought to work. It may be that they have different mounting arrangements but could be modified to work ok.

By the way, the GM #16157512 speakers are currently available from GM as are, of course, the GM #15173232 speakers that I mentioned previously. Both speakers carry the exact same GM list price of $43.00/each. You could get either of these MUCH cheaper through Delco dealers. But, the point is, you should be able to purchase either of these speakers for about the same price unless you're buying them from an individual that's just "unloading" some he has at a "firesale" price.

                Re: Stereo/Speaker Question

You must use 10ohm. I just purchased a pair from Zip Products for $17.50 each.

I did a web serch and found a real bargin if someone needed several pairs. The link below is a canadian surplus compant that has 4X6 delco 10 ohm speakers for $3.50 each. Yes that is right $3.50 each, but you must spend $25 and the shipping is about $20. I would have purchased them but did bot wnat to buy 6-8 speakers. The only other draw back is it looks like you would have to drill 4 holes for the original mounts. This shouldnot be a big problem.

Any way I was already buying some parts from Zip so I just ordered them from them.

I think reconning the old speakers will be much more costly and who is going to be able to check??

Maybe I will put my ond ones on Ebay for some some one to recone who is more a pureist then I am.

You can buy the 16157512 speakers for ~$3.50 from Forist City Surplus, but they have a min of $24 and there is about $20 shipping. You can get 3-4 pairs for under $45. See link below.
I was going to buy some but I ordered a pr from Zip Products since I was already getting parts from them .They wanted $17.50 each.

Thanks Greg. I found that place too and I ordered a pair, along with some other junk to make their $24 minimum.

                    Hopefully they'll work out....it's worth a shot.

                    Thanks again.
