C2 Correct Heater Shut-off Valve Orientation

On a 1965 Corvette with a/c, what is the correct orientation of the heater shut-off valve? Should the vacuum port point down a the 6 o'clock position and the water inlet point straight up as stated in the 1965 JG or should it be just the opposite as seen in the AIM and the shop manual illustrations? I'm putting my car back together and want to get it right the first time.

    Thanks,

    James West

    I vote AIM C60 sheet E6

but turn valve to about 7 o'clock, as is shown in view B. This gets vac tube further away from exh.manifold. Then, coolant hose will exit valve at 1pm (all orientations facing firewall from engine compt.) which allows clearance from top heater hose entering core and the freon hose coming vertically off STV (which lies furthest outboard). This valve orientation permits the coolant hose to naturally fall in the upper position of the fender bracket [no need to X-over heater hoses before negotiating that tight corner under the compressor and on into the intake manifold; see view B of Sht. D3]. I would ignore sheet D6 as far as info on coolant hoses.

Mind you, I'm saying all this never having had a '65 C60 car judged (but I do have one). The only clue on orientation of the valve from the '65 TIM&JG is the 6pm statement for the vac tube.

      Re: I vote AIM C60 sheet E6

James - Wayne has it covered but to support his comments there is a Chevrolet Technical Service Bulletin, DR #66-10, Heater Hose Routing Change Requierd - 1966 Corvette with 327 Cu. In. Engine and Air Condition which shows a Figure of the Heater Hose Routing changes to be performed on 1966 early production sb Corvettes w/ C60, prior to S/N 6S103533, to make the sb 1966 Corvettes w/ C60s heater hose routing similar to 1965 production.

The Figure shows the heater hose coming out of the water shut-off valve is at approximately 12 o'clock.

I also check my sb 67 w/ C60 and the heater hose coming out of the water shut-off valve is at approximately 12 o'clock.

So, if you set the water shut-off valve as Wayne has described at (about) 1pm (where are Mickey's hands?) you'll be in good shape and with most of the judges now having digital watches, you'll pass with flying colors.

Re: C2 Correct Heater Shut-off Valve Orientation

        Pete and Wayne,

Thanks so much for the information, I'll install the shut-off valve coolant line at the 1 o'clock position as you describe, I'm putting the car back together today. My only other comment is I have a new GM NOS shut-off valve and 99% correct reproduction from Paragon. I'm debating whether I should install the NOS one because of it's age and save it and install the repro?

        Thanks again,

        James West
