    C2 Alternator Finish

    I bought a correctly dated & rebuilt 1100693 alternator and it arrived painted. I am looking for suggestions to strip the paint and get it back to the correct finish hopefully without taking the alternator apart. Also is the pulley 3843342AJ correct for my June 1966 build date.

    Thanks,

    Matt #36705

    Matt,

    The 1100693 (37A) is a natural color aluminum. The negative diodes were marked in black ink and the positive in red ink.
    Not sure how to get back without showing sanding/beading.

    Not sure the pulley #, but since yours is without AC (1100693), depending on
    your engine, the diameter of the pulley should be:

    327/300 --> 2 13/16" with groove width 3/8" one piece fan/pulley

    327/350 --> 3 5/8" with gro0ve 1/2" separate fan/pulley

    427/390 --> same as 327/350

      Matt,
      I would try some of the liquid paint remover (not the gell type).
      Use some steel wool and rub a little at a time; must ware gloves.

      Do when you have some time; do not rush the job. Have used on other jobs, but not an alternator, take care not to hit diodes.

        If it is painted, I would question if it is actually restored. I would take the alternator apart and use a paint stripper. Using steel wool, sandpaper, etc will destroy the surface texture of the case. The best way to finish the case would be to send it to John Pirkle or Jerry McNeish and let them restore it.

          Sounds like it received a Sherwin-Williams overhaul.

            I agree with Dickie...send it out and let someone properly restore the alternator. There's no way I would apply paint stripper to an alternator without taking it apart to protect the internals. You've come a long way by finding one that's correctly dated and configured; you may as well pony up the cash to get it done right.
