    C1 Fuel Filter

Over the years I've collected several AC GF48 fuel filters of part number 854444. This is the correct GM number for my 1957 but there are many designs changes in the series. I'm at the point in the restoration to install this part - but which one?

I have two that are a "flat" type, one with the AC on top of the fuel channel and another with the AC off to the side of the channel on top of the cover flat. I have two that have a large hump or dome in the cover design, one with the AC logo small and the other with the AC logo very large both on top of the "hump".

Which of these is period correct for the basic single 4bbl 283 in 1957? I searched the archives and suprisingly got no hits on these part numbers. Car build month was June.

    Re: C1 Fuel Filter

Per the JG, the domed top with the large AC is correct thru 57 (and 58 I believe) the dome with small AC is a part generally seen on the ford T-Birds of the 55--57 era. The others are later, a date is visible on the later models on the under side of the top, bowl and filter element must be removed to see it. The filter element should be of a reddish-brown material, not a paper element.

Flat top AC on cannel first design= later Corvette
Flat top AC on side second design replacment
Dome large AC Correct for your 57 vett
Dome small AC replacment second design
And it dont matter what month your 57 is!

          Heck Roy, do

you still have the OE "solid" filter element? I do! That's a lot easier to spot than the casting date!

Thanks all for the quick responses.

Big AC logo with domed design it is then!

Well I guess at least the flat top one with the AC logo on the channel is good for a resale. It's cast dated "59" on the bottom and is NOS in the vintage AC box so I will try to find someone with a later C1 who can use that one.

            Thanks,

                Well,

the spring is original, although it has been cleaned so many times I doubt any trace of original paint remains. I consulted many sources regarding color when I repainted that engine, which is partly original. You, Noland Adams, and Ken Kayser would top the list. If the opinion of these three gents is not sufficient for the NCRS, I'd say the NCRS is a dead loss. Unless the judging guide has changed since I bought one, I still disagree with them about 55 mufflers.
