Alan, it must have been you that asked about the cloth covered dam for windshield installation a while back. I had never heard of it before and wondered what you were talking about. Appears puzzle has all come together now, but it seems to be academic anyway...nobody makes a equivalent apparently.

      Chuck,
This should be no surprise to the early C3 exterior judges. It was discussed back in the dark ages when I was TL. Today we know it as the "real deal."

        Chuck,
I 'heard' a few years ago that someone with a terrific LT-1 car had made a strip using bed sheet as the fabric and tinted it with shoe polish. When I had an opportunity ,early last year ,to judge the car (WOW!!) I couldn't see it at all, so I don't know how it turned out or if it was even there. I believe, based on my 1 owner and my observations, that you should be able to see the edge of it.

I didn't know that he sold this tape.

I was trying to suggest that he was aware of the use of that tape or dam -- I have heard the "real deal" declared as the windshield is examined. I don't even have to look up from the engine compartment to know what has been found. I have no idea if he has a source for it, but I wouldn't be surprised especially given his profession. You might ask the next time you see him.

It's amazing that I haven't seen this topic discussed here before Alan brought it up recently. You can figure out the rough idea from the AIM, but without some knowledge of the seal configuration, you would be as in the dark on this detail as I was. Thanks John and Terry for the info.

I've heard him use "real deal" in a lot more locations than just the windshield.

John Hinckley says the material is still being used today. If so, it must be available. I'm hoping he reads this and chimes in.

I think all those pickey judges will now be looking for the cloth then the date and logo alot longer than if they don't find the REAL DEAL. Patrick is alread looking for the dam material so keep tuned in for futher results. Sorry I helped let the cat out of the bag for a few judges that didn't know. Judges stick with the discussion board and sooner or later the little known facts come out.

                    Re: '69 Windshield Install, continued

It seems to me, Lyle, that the objective of the NCRS membership should be to educate enthusiastic restorers in the proper way to restore the cars after they have been modded and abused, rather than trying to control access to that information for the exclusive use of the few, the proud, the judging.

I'm not suggesting that keeping a lid on such information for judging purposes is an organizational goal, but maybe there is not engough forthright sharing. When Alan asked the question, there wasn't any conclusive discussion that I can remember. I was left with the idea that maybe Alan was confused. Your asking about the "cloth" in the adhesive raised my curiosity, and I researched it in the AIM. If John hadn't added the insider details, your question about the cloth might have laid there like a dead duck.

Personally, if I were you, I would feel better for my contribution to educating the membership about correct windshield installation, but that's just me.

I don't know who has been keeping this a secret -- I talk about it frequently at the Advanced Judging Schools at Regionals. I have heard other judges (especially the individual who often uses the phrase "real deal") talk about the cloth used in the windshields at those sessions as well. NCRS has a system in place to share what we have learned with the membership, but it does require participation in NCRS events for it to work.

Aw, Terry...Now you've stabbed me in the heart with a dagger! I don't have a life, so I stay on this discussion board all the time! I participate in at least one, maybe two NCRS events every year. I'll probably never get my Master Judge's Hat at that rate, but that's OK; I'm good with that.

When I go to an event, I'm usually not judging, so I go to all the tech sessions, judging schools, yadda, yadda. I behave like I paid tuition for this stuff...I think I even passed up a free dinner at Park City to hear Dave McClelland talk about Corvettes (Not restoration related, but indicates interest level. )

However, I can't remember being at one of yours...when's your next? If it's within 600-700 miles (or the National), I'll be there with bells on. Hmmmm...maybe I need to observer judge with exterior teams...I've obviously have been missing something here.

He's already on the schedule for the Motor City Regional in May 2008, too.

I made sure of that long ago AND even informed Terry.

I'll bet a nice yellow car shows up as a "victim" for the school.

Dick, tanks. I'm not surprised about there being AJS at Charlotte.

Patrick I probably filed our discussion about the Motor City Regional away given it is 2008. I take it one year at a time. I will be grateful to be on this side of the sod by then.

We can only use the yellow car if the cloth dam is showing -- then we have to get Chuck there.
