    63-64 Judging Guide Question; under dash

    In the 3rd edition of the 63-64 Judging Guide, page 45, section 14 "areas under dash", it states;

    "PEDALS AND PADS. ALL BRAKE AND CLUTCH PEDAL PADS HAVE A PATTERN OF HORIZONTAL BARS ON BOTH MANUAL AND POWERGLIDE TRANSMISSION CARS. THE INTERIOR PORTION OF THE THROTTLE LINKAGE IS CADMIUN OR ZINC PLATED. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS SECURED WITH TWO BLACK PHOSPHATE PLATED PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWS".

    I'm curious about the horizontal bars on PG, the cad or zinc plating on the inside throttle rod and the black accl pedal screws.

    Michael, The plating of the accelerator pedal throttle rod is a confusing one. I realize that the judges are looking for a cad or zinc one. But I never understood why??? All the NOS ones I have seen and ones or original cars have been some form of phosphate-black looking. I was so confused on that part that as of the moment I forget which way we went with my car. Don't know if we did the cad or the black. SOrry I cannot asnwer you question better. John

      Thanks John. Of the three items I discussed above, the inside throttle lever is the only one I'm 100% sure of. It was positively black, or dark grey. Not zincad silver.

      Pretty sure the accelerator pedal phillips head screws are zincad and the PowerGlide brake pedal pad had vertical ribs, not horizontal. Need input on these though.

        Michael, I had two NOS rods and they were blackened. Long time ago I asked Jorjorian what color the rod was and he said black also. I don't know what the manuals say as I seldom read them. John

          One would think the 63-64 Judging Chairman would be interested enuff to comment on some of the questions

            I Think We'll Come Back To This One......

            ....in a week or two after we've had a chance to look at a few orig throttle rods and accelerator pedal screws. Here's a pic of the brake pedal pad on a Powerglide equipped car that shows the vertical ribs, not Horizontal. For now, at least the wording on that part can be corrected.

                Thanks Ken. I believe that is correct. I just looked at a photo of a new 63 interior and the color/plating on the accl pedal screws is, as you mention, silver, or zinc.

                  Michael -

                  I recall that when I bought a brand-new '65 coupe with a black/white interior (black carpets), I wondered why the two accelerator pedal screws weren't plated black so they wouldn't stand out against the black pedal and carpet.

                    Thanks John. I just found a few pic's of new 63 interiors that agree with the color that you remember. Bright, shinny cad or zinc. I'll post the pic later.

                      Pic Of Original 63 Throttle Rod

                      Just got this picture from Robert Jorjorian. This is a completely original unrestored 63. Even has it's original carpets. Pretty clearly shows the throttle rod as grey, not the silver that it would be if it were cad or zinc.

                        Pic Of New 63 Accl Pedal Rod & Screws

                        Finally found this original 8X10 of a new 63 interior. (knew it was here somewhere) Pic was taken in late 62 or early 63 and clearly shows a grey throttle rod. Also, somewhat visible, are the silver (bright cad or zinc) accelerator pedal phillipps head screws.
