    63-82 corvette third member style.....

I'm just curious to see what styles/classes the corvette differential used through the years. I don't know much about this topic but I've heard of terms like Dana 44, Dana 60, etc to identify a type of rear end. I guess eaton made some too...

Can the corvette differential be classified in such a way or is "corvette" the classification that is used?

    Thanks,

    Greg Linton

65-79 used Eaton's. The spider gears and clutch types changed over the years and there were 2 types of cases used,65-70 & 71-79's.

The '63 to '79 Corvette axle design is unique to Corvette. It was designed by GM with most components manufactured by GM. The early Positraction case assemblies were made by Borg-Warner, but were replaced by Eaton manufactured units circa '64 and these improved Postiraction cases can be fitted into the earlier axles that originally had B-W Positraction case assemblies.

"Dana 44", etc, refer to specific axle designs that were either designed and/or manufactured by Dana Corp. and were used in seveal GM model lines any maybe by some other automotive OEMs. I believe Corvette axles after '79 did use one of these "standard designs" with the components were installed in Corvette's unique integral aluminum carrier/cross member design.

So the '63-'79 Corvette axle is simply "Corvette axle", and it uses an Eaton supplied Postiraction case that is unique to the Corvette axle design as are the ring and pinion sets.

Replacement cone-type Postiraction case assemblies are also available from Auburn Gear (formerly a division of Borg-Warner). They are cheaper than the Eaton clutch pack type Positraction, but perfectly adequate for road use.
