Lately, I hear the brake pistons releasing almost every time I release the brake and begin to move forward. Brake pads, which I believe are semi-metallic, have atleast 3/4 left. I drive the car almost daily, which I thought would make this a non-issue. I am not aware of what type of method was used to rebuild the calipers, as it was done by the previous owner. The pads have self-adhesive anti-squeak shims on them, but no anti-squeak compound.

I think that what you're hearing is something else besides the "brake pistons releasing". I can't imagine that you'd be able to hear the brake pistons releasing under any circumstances. In fact, the actual caliper piston travel in these systems is miniscule. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: '66 brake piston release noise
You will hear the pad slide from stop to stop when changing directions from forward to reverse etc. You may also hear a bump if the caliper bolts are loose. And if there is any slop in the control arm bushings they will shift and pop. Could be a lot of things.- Top

Re: '66 brake piston release noise
Rob,
I had a simular noise with my 66. I have repo knock-offs with the pin to keep them from backing out. Who ever was the last to put on one of my wheels didn't spin it up tight and put the pin in. It kept the tire from backing off but there was a small gap on the spindle and any change of direction would cause a bang. Just another thought.- Top
