Agree that if your approach is to taper grind and glass up the hole, it's best to leave it as small as possible. I wouldn't rip up the dry glass though. Random fiber mat already has this accomplished for you and it lays down nice and compact in the laminate to opimize the fiber to resin ratio.

My method is better because I use OEM glass with precisely the same fiber/resin ratio as the rest of the deck..
