I have a '58 Corvette I'm putting back together. When we bought it it had an alumninum Powerglide trans. The car apparently was originally equipped with a manual trans as it still had the clutch pedal and rod through the firewall and the bellcrank bracket and ball assembly welded to the frame. I'll not be using this trans again and would like sell it at the Kissimmee show later this month. But first I need to know what I have. The only ID info I've found is an aluminum tag on the right side of the case it is stamped as follows "469 77-CP-49592". There are some casting numbers and letters on it as well. On the top area of the "bellhousing" is a large number "12". On bottom right front is "General Motors...." and on the very short tail section is a "C". Might these be mold ID numbers? I understand that the aluminum case didn't get into production until late 1961. Does anyone have an idea of what I might have here? It is in very good condition as is the engine...maybe rebuilt but not run. We did drive the car around our yard several times when we first brought it home and everything was A-OK. Thanks for any help you can give, Gary #43219

Re: C1 PowerGlide ID
Terry, thanks for your fast response. In answer to your questions: 1. I've gone over the trans pretty good but but see any other stamping or casting info. There may be stamping under the pan but since it's still attached, I can't see anything. 2. The tailshaft/housing length is 4 5/8" including about 5/8/" of the splined shaft. 3. There is provision for external cooling; 2 oil lines on the right front side of the case at the point where the "bell hsg." meets the case. There was an oil cooler on our car when we got it. I hope this helps- Top

Re: C1 PowerGlide ID
Terry, I went out to our "garage" (barn) to check out the trans again. It turns out that on the bottom of the pan in great big letters it says TURBO 400. I don't know if this was ever used in Corvettes or not. Does this help at all?- Top
