We are getting ready to do a mechanical restoration of our 69 427/400 conv. and am wondering about new carbs versus rebuilt. Do I buy the new ones and not worry about matching numbers since I am not worried about value(our kids can worry about that)and am more interested in it running well? Or do I go with rebuilt, correct dated? The car is a numbers matching, 55k miles, with tank sticker etc. with the exception repainted red from original riverside gold.

Since it sounds like you have the correct/original carbs for this engine, it makes little sense to go source 'new' ones. The cost of having a set of existing carbs restored is going to be MUCH cheaper than buying replacements...- Top

With only having 55k on the how much wear could be on the center carbs shaft? The other two since they were not used constantly during the accumulation of 55K miles could be in pretty good mechanical condition. Cleaning and installing rebuild kits in Holley carbs is generally a easy thing to do. Making them look like brand new carbs would take some chemical cleaning and dipping. Underneath the air cleaner original clean carbs would satisfy some owners.- Top

there are nothing wrong with rebuilds because
the only part that wears on a carb is the throttle shaft and the shaft housing. these parts can be repaired with no problem. where the problem comes in if the rebuilder does not check and repair the gasket mating surfaces .the rebuilder also need to know what the original size of all the drillings in the carb were so he can gauge check them for modifications made by some previous carb magician. best if the rebuilder runs the rebuild carb on a engine before sending it back- Top
