Does any one know why the pinch welts are called that name? Must be an old Henry Ford term or a term from that era. an upsholsters term. Maybe from the old horseless carriage era.
In an old Webster dictionary it does not list that term. But if you look up welt it says,"A strip of material, often folded over a cord, placed at the edge or seam of a garment to reinfoce or trim it."
I imagine that pinch welt was put on the metal seat frames to prevent a person from cutting his fingers on the sharp edge of the metal.
The original pinch welt from my 63 with red interior has a special metal clip in the center of it which I assume is to help keep the pinch welt in place.
By the way for your interest this particular pinch welt shows evidence of red dye on it. Has some red on the top and some red under neath. The underside of the original pinch welt is reinforced with a steel liner.
I doubt if this is typical of most factory cars though. I have no proof that this part is even original. Have no pics. Only thing I can tell you is that it was on the car since 1970 and when the car was restored we forgot to put the pinch welts back on. Ran out of time.
From the previous discussion I read that the majority of the pinchwelts were black. Course this board also thrives on stuff that isn't typical. So I contend that I if were to put the red pinch welts back on the car I would be criticised. So therefore that's what I plan to do because that is what makes it fun. Don't care if I am criticised. Love citicism. Used to get it all the time from my other half. John
