I'm a Corvette guy from way back, but I've never done a body off restoration. (I was the last on to buy a VCR too). I'm a decent mechanic, so I should be able to do this. My biggest problem is the best way to remove the steering column. I've heard you can leave it with the body or leave it on the frame? Which is best? Pitman arm removal? Thanks!

Re: 56 Body Off
When the '53-'57 cars were built, the steering column/gear was installed in the body (less the pitman arm) prior to body drop; there's no way to install (or remove) it later on without major disassembly. Take it up with the body, install it in the body before you drop the body back on.- Top

Re: 56 Body Off
Just lifted the body off of my '57. We removed the plug from the pittman side of the drag link and left the stud and socket in the pittman arm. We removed the generator bracket and #1 sparkplug for added clearance. Take care to swing the pittman arm by careful rotation of the steering wheel while lifting to obtain the greatest clearance- Top
