    C2 SB Tach cable installation......

My car lost a couple of points at the National for an incorrect tach cable. I ordered one from Long Island, and it has all of the correct crimps and knural nuts that the judge said were necessary.

The new cable slipped through the firewall grommet very easy (I was expecting some difficulty) and the knurl nuts went on with no problem. But when I stared the engine, no RPM on the Tach. I re-set the cable several times on both ends and occasionally the Tach would read RPM's for a few seconds and then zero. The new cable appears to be the same length as the old one and there were no problems with the Tach when the old cable was installed.
Is there something that I am not doing or is there some special trick that is
    required?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    DP

I don't know what length of cable LIC sells but I have had trouble with repro cables that are 27" in length. Makes for excessive bends which either breaks the cable or it acts eratic as the spring winds up and releases. A 25 1/2" (flange to flange) cable seems to be correct length and doesn't kink at the firewall or under under the dash.

Undo the cable at the distributor end and spin the cable manually to see if speedo needle moves. Spin both ways I can't remember which way is correct.

Also the cable is compressed square at the distributor end is tricky to insert into the drive gear. If there are any burrs on the square end fitting it will not seat in the gear.

To remove the cable for inspection it comes out at the speedo end only.

      Randy:
I assume that your comments apply to the Tach cable as well as the Speedo cable(?)

I will remove the cable and try to insert the "squared" into the distributor. The end that goes into the Tach has a plastic fitting that is square shaped.

        Dwight,

My mistake. Yes I meant the tach needle and cable can be removed from tach end.
I have been on my head under the dash too long
