    67 key envelope--reproduced??

I haven't seen these advertised anywhere as reproduced, but just ran across one that somehow doesn't have the right feel to it. How do I tell an original?
Also, is the part number supposed to be there in the lower right corner? A couple of supposedly original ones on ebay have lacked that. Thanks for your help.

Is that really necessary for judging? It's not in the JG, it's not in the A.I.M. Miscellaneous Shipping List, and wasn't installed at St. Louis.

I don't know about 1967, but a new 1970 came with a key envelope -- the spare set of keys and knocked out numbers from the other set were put in the envelope as part of normal new car prep.

Mike, Look at the tab. Does it have glue on it like an lickable envelop? I have never seen a repo with the glue on them.

I note that John brings up an important point. I've been curious if they "really" came with 67s as I see them on eBay (but I also note that all eBay parts are advertized for 67 Corvettes) and that the Long Island catalog lists the #2-04Y KEY ENVELOPE for 67-8, or if they came with 68s and since 67s had the same key configuration that someone figured that 67s must of had the envelopes also.

So, does anyone have some documented proof or intelligence on the existence of the 67(?) key envelope as part of the new vehicle, specifically the 67 Corvette, delivery package or are we dealing with another "urban legend?" Are they "real" or a "rip off?"

I have a '67 Coupe that I bought new. I still have the original ignition and 'B' keys, but don't remember there being an envelope. Of course, at my age, my memory could be flawed. I bought the car from my cousin who was a dealer at the time and is still involved in restoration. I will ask him what he remembers.

                    Re: 67 key envelope--reproduced??

I have gone through junkyards many times, probably too many time since my mind may be full of the same things. Nevertheless. When searching in glove boxes of 63-72 chevrolet cars, occassionally I would find a plastic owner's documentation envelop with the owners manual, warranty book, battery info, information brochure. It would also contain a key envelop with the knockout(s) inside the envelop.

For early midyear cars with one key for both the trunk and the ignition, the key envelop would have an octogonal key on the envelop and would have one line to write in the key number. When Chevy changed to two keys, one for the trunk, and rounder type of key and the octogaonal key for the ignition the key envelop chenged to have two lines, one for each key number. I found this style in 67 & 68 chevrolet cars. The ignition and trunk keys change in 1969, to a square ignition key and round for the trunk. Both keys had the GM mark of excellance logo and the key envelop changed with a picture of the square key also showing the GM mark of excellence logo. It also had two lines for the key number, one for ignition and one for the trunk.

With that information, since Chevrolet metal cars came with key envelops, it would seem that Corvettes also came with a key envelop. It is possible that the key envelops were provided by the dealer and not provided with the car from the factory. I cannot speak to that. I only know that I found over 60 keys envelops over time searching in junk yards. I also have spoken to a number of GM owners manual swap dealers, who recall that the key envelops were in the envelop, but they threw them away thinking the only valuable piece of literature was the owners manual or other documentation and not a key envelop with a number written on it.

There were, to my knowledge at least three types of key envelops. 1963-66 (one octagonal key), 1967-68 (two keys, one round and one octagonal, 1969 and up, (two keys one was square for the ignition and one round for the trunk). There may have been some change to the key envelop in 71, but I don't recall id there was any difference.
