    C3 - 1970 Carpet

The first of the Santa's presents is ready to go in, I have the interior of the 70 coupe mostly appart and old carpet is out. What is left behind is the original (?) jute matting stuck in places to the fiberglass and what best I can describe is an "oil soaked" cardboard over the jute. I bought the sound deadener kit so I'm thinking that I want to take all this old jute and "oil cardboard" out, the new carpet has jute on it. Is this the right thing? Where does it get glued back in, all over or just select spots? Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

Realize that you original jute is cut to fit exactly correct. Compare it to the jute pattern on the carpet - they won't match. I've kept the original pieces of jute from a 70, and used it several times in assisting to pattern jute for carpet replacements.

I usually remove the jute with the hard backing, and use it as a template for new jute. Even if the new jute is glued to the new carpet, you should be able to figure out where jute material should be added, and where it should be removed to fit properly.

Also, be sure you have the correct carpet (4 speed vs. automatic) for the passenger's side floor. They should be shaped differently, and will not fit well if put into a car with the "other" transmission.

You may glue the new stuff where you wish. I've done it a variety of ways, and none has worked any better in the long run.

most hardware stores have a material that looks like bubble wrap covered with foil on both sides---cuts super easy glues down nice and insulates excellent---

I prefer the heat deflecting sound deadening jute I get from swap meets that has the foil-like skin on one side. Harder to cut but most effective.

I've used the bubble wrap covered with foil material on my '70. It was easy to cut and worked quite well for sound dead and heat.
