    C3 differential

    Hi Guys,

Yet another differential question. Has a 3.70 a 4 series or 3 series carrier(68 model)

Second : is there anyway to tell if a ring/pinion has suffered from misalignment of the gears and the resulting noise without using it in operation and with a disassembled diff ?

    Thanks

    Yves

    Yves -

    The 3.70 used a 3-series carrier.

The ring gear teeth will develop a wear pattern during operation. The applicable Overhaul Manual will show a drawing or photograph of a correct wear pattern and various incorrect wear patterns, and it will have a description of what is necessary to correct the improper pattern. Alternately one can apply a paste (I have forgotten the chemical name) that retains the contact pattern when the ring is operated through one revolution by turning the pinion 3.7 revolutions. That contact pattern should duplicate the correct pattern as illustrated in the manual.
This checking of the contact pattern should be preformed each time the differential is disassembled and reassembled to ensure long and quiet operation of the gear set.

In order to get a good setup you should check the pattern before disassembly if possible. I personally would never buy a used set of gears not knowing the history. If the patern was set up different then the manual shows- as most aftermarket sets do, you may create more problems.
The after market gears usually set up to the toe and rarely align as deplicted in the manuals.
With respect to the 370 ratio I use Tom's 373 gear which has more teeth and is machined to Tom's spec's.

        Good luck
