    C1 Gas Tank Cover

What is the proper installation of the retaining screws and taps for the gas tank cover? I purchased a 'set' and received star washers, flat washers to go with the sheet metal (?) screws and machine threaded screws. I don't remember ever seeing these used on any of my old cars.

Also, what is the proper screw, slot, phillips, type and size, for attaching the front air ducts for a 1960? It does not look like there was any adhesive on my inner fender originally, were they simply attached with screws?

My 61, that I am quite sure is original, has philips head screws with a copper washer on each screw. The fibreglass tank surround on which the tank cover sits, has speed nuts pushed onto the fibreglass ( springy U shaped black metal bits that have threads in the bottom to recieve the screws) .

      Dave--
Your sense is correct--they sold you pieces that are functional, but hardware store variety rather than original configuration.

Thanks Mike and Rich. Does anyone market the correct material? Also, the screws, part number 273449 according to the Adams book, holding the front air deflectors, were they supplied with the parts (ducts) or supplied by dealer or person installing after delivery?

          Richard,

Are all the screws the same - meaning none of them are machine screws with threads but rather they are all metal screws - both along the rear and the front edge of the cover.

          Thanks.

I'd like to take the liberty of asking a related question:

My '62 is pretty original and the tank cover is unpainted and covered by a piece of black material (felt, velvet?). I've been told the cover is not the original since it should be painted the interior color (the car is red in and out). What is correct - painted or unpainted?

My Hardtop only car was painted and did not have the cloth covering.

Loren - By "compartment cover" do you mean the soft top compartment cover? I'm referring to the gas tank cover which the muslin cloth was placed over. Mine is not painted and appeared to not have been removed before I did so. Thanks,

To me the "softtop compartment cover" the the softop deck lid; the cover I refer to is the cover in the softtop well that covers the gas tank..

Thanks Loren. This means that for some reason the cover in my car was replaced. My car sustained some damage to the front at some point, but the glass elsewhere was all in tact with no sings of damage, so I would consider it virtually impossible to damage or destroy the cover - I'm baffled.

                      Thanks again.
