I have a question regarding the correct orientation of fasteners on the frame of my car. I am preparing to disassemble the frame and I note there are some unusual bolt orientations. The front frame member is retained by 16 bolts. The front group has the threads pointed up and the rear group has the threadss pointed down. The AIM shows all bolt orientations in the same direction. The car is a late '57 and has two rear axle bumpers. The bolts on the front bumper are pointed up but the rear ones are pointed down, the AIM shows the orientation of both sets of bumper bolts the same. When reassembling should I put them the way they came out or the way the AIM shows? I am fairly certain these fasteners have never been disturbed.

Re: Fastener orientation
Took a quick look at my two vettes......
61 vette - 8 inboard bolts and 4 rear R/L outboard bolts are all washer and nut topside. the 4 front R/L outboard bolts have the nut and washer on the bottom.
57 vette - all bolts have the nut and washer on the bottomside.- Top

Re: Fastener orientation
Here are photos of the fasteners. Far as I can tell they are original. (can you believe that some even broke as I removed them:) )
Let us know if yours were in the same orientation as mine. If not it was probably a random installation.
I can still not believe how bad it was under there and how nice it looks now! Of course I had a little help.

Re: Fastener orientation
I recall a paragraph in the book Dale Pearman prepared for our joint presentation at the Bloomington Gold Restoration Workshops in 2002 on '58-'62 Chassis Assembly that the four inboard crossmember bolts on each side were installed with the heads facing the ground and the outboard four on each side were installed with the nuts and washers facing the ground in order to avoid interference between the inboard bolts and the bumper brackets.- Top
