I have a 66 327 cu.in. with the aluminum valve covers. The covers need a little cleaning up and I just read in the archive that Eagle 1 mag wheel polish is the product to use combined with a "scrub pad". Apparently there is a abrasive in the product as it implies that if you scrub more you get a different finish. My concern is I don't want to "polish" the covers and loose points according to NCRS standards. So, what should I use for a lite clean up as they don't need beadblasting or anything that severe. Thanks Bill

Re: Cleaning Valve Covers
Try rubbing with fine steel wool. Works for me every time and I can control the degree of brightness. You want a funky grayish color when finished, not bright, similar to galvanized tin. The covers are made from a high alloy aluminum with a LOT of other metals so they don't respond well to plain old aluminum cleaner like used at truck stops on aluminum 18 wheeler trailers. I've hear of people using toilet bowl cleaner and steel wool but I never needed the cleaner. Also, a highly diluted solution of muriatic acid might do wonders but the stuff is dangerous and fast acting.
