One More Time - BJ '07

Now that we all have had fun bashing BJ and the cars, here is a more positive take from a local AZ news article...

    Barrett-Jackson raises $4M for charities
    Jan. 25, 2007 02:18 PM
SCOTTSDALE - The 36th annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction raised more than $4 million this month for local and national charities, nearly doubling last year's record of $2.5 million.

Childhelp, a national organization that treats victims of child abuse, is a primary beneficiary of the auction. During the auction's annual evening gala, nearly $1.5 million was raised.

One of the biggest donations came in one sale of a 1993 Hummer H1, the "CNN's Warrior One," which sold for $1 million. The monies will benefit the Fisher House, a hospitality program for military families. In addition, another bidder added a $250,000 donation for the Fisher House.

Yes but how much did B/J make? Let's see 20% of 96 million? And how much of what was raised did they contribute? Oh yeah the commision on the Hummer. Don't be so eager to pat them on the back.

First of all, I wasn't patting them on the back. I was mearly passing on some information about the good that resulted from the auction.

What difference does it make how much BJ made? By the way it would be 18% (10% seller/8% buyer) not 20%! There not getting my money, so I don't care

no matter how you feel about BJ the bottom line is they have given trmendous recognition and credibility to the car hobby. when you go to the bank now to buy a classic car you can bet there is a good chance your banker has seen BJ and you can bet it helps. The industry as a whole has benefited from these auctions as well as BJ. i wouldn't ecxactly call them an over nite success. they made about what celeb makes for one movie. now i am not embaressed when i tell people what i have in my 66 BB vette. i agree its all showmanship and hype and the rich thrive on it, but we are all the better for it.

Most people that create a successful business are respected and admired. They obviously have hired the right people and made the correct dicisions. Why do so many resent the success of Barrett-Jackson and Proteam?

If they grossed 100 million with gross profit of 18 million they gave charity more then 20% of there GROSS profit. If they have an outstanding profit margin
after expenses they are still giving 30 to 40 percent of the NET profit to charity! Not many of us come anywhere close to giving more then 5% of Gross profit to anybody.

They didn't give 20%. The only mention of them giving anything was they waved the buyer and seller fees on the CNN Hummer that was sold and the proceeds went to the Fisher House. I will agree that maybe they have done our hobby some good as far as recognition goes, but just like E-Bay I think they have done some serious harm to the hobby with the inflated prices.

I just had a customer at my business ask how to sell on E-Bay. He saw B/J for the first time this year and now thinks his 67 driver is worth a hundred thousand.I'm sure this scenerio is played out all over the country.

i agree with unreality of ebay and what people think cars are worth. i feel the only cars you can reasonably bank on are mid year BB's and then it comes down to color originality and documentation and condition of coures. i am sick of ebay if i set one more set of "E" bolts for $100 i think i am going to puke.

I understand that it is 18%. That is why I said 18 million. The amount of money given to charity was more then 20% of the fees they realized.
I just don't understand why there is so much resentment. Whatever the percent or whatever the perspective it's over 4 million dollars and they should be commended for the effort and not criticized.
With regard to the prices, it's free enterprize and nobody is forced to bid.
I bought my first house for 14K and it recently sold for 150K. I wish I could have afforded to keep each of the 5 houses I have sold since then as well as the dozen or so cars. Again, I respect those that were smart enough to invest in real estate. Why the resentment? How is it hurting you or me, especially if you already own one or more.
