    1966 rear view mirror question

    i removed a mirror from my 66 vette that i thought was a cheap parts store special to put on a stainless one i bought. i was suprised to see it was a factory mirror but would like help in identifying what it belongs on. it is identical but is black vinyl covered metal it says "GUIDE GLARE PROOF" and made in the USA. it also has a number of which i can only make out part of ..01-99030. is it even off a vette? bill

    sounds like the 67 vette service replacement mirrors that were, and still may be, available from GM. mike

      Yes, I believe that you're referring to the GM #911957 mirror and that does sound like what was described. This was actually a SERVICE mirror for all 1963-73 Corvettes and I believe that it was used in PRODUCTION for 1972-73 Corvettes. It was discontinued from SERVICE in April, 1993.

          If it's what we think it is, I'm sure that it would have value for someone with a 1972-73 Corvette requiring a mirror.

          As far as changing the mirror glass:

          1) I'm not sure that the mirror glass on a 1966 original is exactly the same configuration as the glass on the replacement you have. In fact, I strongly suspect that it's not. If I'm right, the glass will not be interchangeable;

          2) Even if they are the same, I would not attempt to swap the glasses. The later mirror glass will not be original for your car, anyway, and you can purchases reproduction glass;

          3) If your 1966 original mirror requires new mirror glass, I would just have new reproduction glass professionally installed.

            Add-on

            The '64-66 day/nite mirror is very similar to the '67-71 and '72-73 versions. The differences are:

            (1) '64-71 use a polished SS housing while '72-73 mirrors have the housing 'blacked out' to thwart outward reflection.

            (2) The '64-66 version has the glass crimped inside the case while the later mirrors have a protective plastic surrounding the glass (thank Ralph Nader..the plastic is there to avoid facial cuts in a crash).

            The glass is 'almost' the same for all three versions in terms of dimensions and Paragon sells do-it-yourself replacement glass for the '67-73 mirrors. The key difference is the glass for the early mirror has both the front and back edges beveled slightly to absorb the material thickness of the SS case where it's crimped around the glass.

            The later glass is cut straight with edges being right-angled. You can replace the glass yourself, easily, on '67-73 mirrors by ordering the Paragon replacement glass, cracking out your existing glass, cleaning the plastic holder, laying down a bead of RTV (silicone bathtub caulk) and 'popping' the replacement glass into the plastic holder.

            Most send their early mirrors out to a 'specialist' for glass replacement and they pay a rather hefty price for the service. But, if you pay attention to the P's and Q's, you CAN do it yourself!

            You buy the late era replacement glass from Paragon. Now, crack and remove your existing glass. Save a major piece of the original glass and observe the front/rear beveling...

            Take the late series Paragon replacement glass to your local glass shop and ask them to bevel the edges to match the early glass. With the glass out of the early case, carefully de-crimp the outside edge of the case and 'pop' your replacement glass in. Fixture a support for the mirror and CAREFULLY re-crimp the outside edge against the glass.

            PS: Do NOT break the replacement glass when you execute the RECRIMP...that's where the professional restorer's 'art' lives!!!
