63 glove box striker & retainer

does your '63 ser# before 9,000 have a chrome striker or black spring steal type and a chrome or plated "U" shaped retainer to hold the lock assembly?
i belive after viewing two other samples, including mine that if you have the plated "U" retainer you will also have the black spring steal striker w/black screws to secure the retainer. JG makes no mention of the striker in any other form but chrome. there may need to be a revision for early cars w/ reguards to the striker, but i need more samples to prove my findings before submitting for correction (positive attitude)in the 63-4 JG.

Jim, I know for a fact that an early '63 in the 2000 range had the black striker plate. In fact if you used the chrome one in place of the black one that door would not stay closed. My '63 is almost 10,000 and has the typical chrome one. You hear very little about the black striker plates, etc.
An old Grady Davis Gulf Research 63 had the early glove box door that had a different grain to the fiberglass. More rougher-not the typical texture of the later style. It had the black catch. Dr. Mike McCagh if you are looking in maybe you can give the number of Dr. Blatchley's old 63 that RM bought. I used to know it but forgot. Think it's around 2800 but not sure. John

      Jim,

My 63 serial is low 3000"s November 62 build and it has the black striker and cad plated retainer. Also has the early style lock that I changed because I thought it had been replaced but I am changing it back.

See,,,, This is what we ought NOT TO be doing to satisfy inclompete/wrong data compiled without real investigation. i want the car to be as produced and not per someones opinion!!! this is the type of data it will take to make changes. thanks for your responce John and Tim. Lets keep the information chain flowing. I would like to write an artical on this with enough documentaion to support such a trivial part for the hobby. I think, the striker and "U" shaped retainer go hand and hand. When both parts were used up is when the chrome ones were then used. I know we are good till about the 9,000 production but more info is needed to make a change as i have already stated. Thanks again for keeping this hobby an on-going puzzel of bitts and pieces. Jim

Jim, Here is a quote from Michael Hanson. "By the way, the 63 glove box door, lock cylinder and bezel, lock retainer and striker all changed at about the same time. The new door with the round lock bezel came about the same time as the new chrome cylinder retainer and striker."

Does anyone know for sure if the early style 63 lock is the same as the later 64 up lock because it looks the same.
