C2 side exhaust

The original GM pipes on my 1966 roadster are finally on their way out after forty years-they've gotten bad enough where they are no longer repairable. I'm looking to the members for input regarding the various reproduction pipes that are available and a recommendation as to which ones sound the LOUDEST yet still have a nice tone to the exhaust note. The few people to whom I've spoken about these reproductions have told me they were not happy with the sound (one individual likened the sound to a muffler with a hole in it!). All input and opinions will be appreciated. Thank you.

Joe,

Your choices are as follows:

1. NOS GM sidepipes, which have been out of production for the last few years, or so.
2. Stainless Works reproductions, which are available in various configurations.
3. Allens reproductions, which are available in various configurations.
4. Sweet Thunder reproductions, which are available in various configurations.
5. Fabricating your own, using "Spiral Turbo Baffle" inserts.
6. Fabricating your own, using "bullet" style mufflers.

If you own a big block, I would NOT recommend using either NOS, or original config. reproductions. If you have a smallblock, their use is still discouraged, but they will not degrade your top eng perf. to the same degree that they will for a BB.

Original/orig config. repros use 2 1/2" outer and 1 7/8" inner tubes. Reproductions are available with 1 7/8", 2", 2 1/4", or 2 1/2" inner tubes, depending on manufacturer. All which use 2 1/2" inners MUST use 3" outers, which will fit under your covers. When using the 2 1/2" with 3" outer pipes, supplemental "blanket" insulation is required, to protect the covers.

does any one offer just header pipes to convert original used and NOS side pipes to BB use and are the muffler sections on 2 1/2' SB and BB the same. This seems to be an affordable solution as i see alot of SB systems available.

Sweet Thunder makes the head pipe separate from the muffler section. They can probably sell you the head pipes alone, which you can fit and weld to your stock mufflers.
The muffler sections are the same for BB and SB!!!
