repro delco distributor cap for 69

Just wondering how well these new repro caps do on the judging field?

Would it matter who I bought one from or are they all made by the same company?

    Thanks,

Greg - The repop Delco-Remy caps look respectable from what I have seen. Best folks have noted is minor differences in the embossed lettering on the top and that's for the 68 and earlier caps that have DELCO-REMY/PATENT PENDING.

Be sure to check and see what wording is supposed to be on the 69 cap because it's not one size fits all as you go thru the years because the wording on the top changed.

It is generally accepted that the patent pending R continued through the '72 model year.

the 8 mold holes in the top of the cap are much deeper on the repos than the originals and the font size of the repo is thinner than the originals. i suspect the c-2 judges will have no problem differentiating.mike

What kind of a points hit would I take then if I bought one? I'm just trying to figure out if I should go repro or hold out for the real thing...

Re: repro delco distributor cap for 69

At one of my local chapter's judging schools last spring, a 500 point Master Judge showed several known original examples of the midyear distributor cap, as well as the new repro. He pointed out how some of the originals differed amongst themselves in minor ways, including the depth of the mold holes (different vendors?). (I don't remember about the lettering one way or another.) I do, however, recall him stating that the repros represent one of the known variations, and should receive all originality points in flight judging.

                Buy a good used original

At the recent FL NCRS meet, there were scalpers asking about $75 for a nice used original cap. I have bought several on e-bay for about $20 each (now that the repro is out, the used originals don't bring as much $$$).

Re: Buy a good used original

Thanks again guys and it's nice to know that if I do get a repro that it should get full points.

On the other hand if good originals are now going for around $20 I might just get one of those...it's cheaper and it's original. Mark I also noticed a lot of caps for sale at the meet last weekend but wasn't quite sure which was correct for my car or I probably would have dished out the $75 not knowing how cheap they really are now. I just checked my judging guide and it says that for 69 the cap should say "Delco Remy" and "PAT.PENDING R" or "PATENT 2769047"...is this still correct? Were these caps used up to 74 and if so were they all the same or could some have the correct lettering but be configued slightly different after 69?

It's too bad we didn't get a chance to meet up last weekend Mark because I was looking forward to meeting you...maybe next year. I have this whole NCRS show/swap meet thing in my blood now and plan to catch the National one in Boston and maybe the Vegas one too so maybe we'll get together at one of those.

With 15 originality points divided between the dist., vacuum advance, and cap that could give 5 points to each of this pieces. With the difference in configration of the repro caps mold hole depth and fonts of the Delco script, I would think a 1 point deduct would be in order.

Note that the new edition of the 1970-72 TIM & JG call for the Patent Pending R. At some point in the future the 1969-68 will be revised to reflect the same. Judges today are looking for the Patent Pending R caps on 1968-72 cars.
