Re: 70 Heater Core Install Help

    Ray,

The heater core is inside of the inner heater box. On my '68 A/C car, I had to remove the right lower dash, & the center instrument stack (as per chassis manual) to get to my heater box. Once the ductwork was out of the way, I removed the inner box & took it to the bench.

Once on the bench, it is simply a matter of taking out the old core & installing the new one in reverse order.

It's a bit of a pain, but pretty straight forward. I imagine that the core in a '70 would have to be changed in about the same manner.

      Pic Tips for 1979

This is how I did it on my 1979, no A/C, through the firewall. There may be a few tips there.

Re: 70 Heater Core Install Help

My original owner 70 coupe has air and I removed my heater core from the inside. The service manual for my 70 was what I used for removal. When I do my original owner 68 without air I am also going to do it from inside, do not want to disturb the factory installation on the firewall. Reguardless of how you do it on your 70 I would remove the side grille to give more access with out having to lean over a fender. If you decide to remove from the inside the right side dash removal is a starting point. There is at least one bolt from the inside that goes through the firewall that has to have a nut removed from the firewall side to remove the interior heater core housing. The 70 Corvette Registry has some pictures of a heater core remove on a blue 70 Corvette convertible done by professionals. This car had air, but the procedure is basically the same.

The job can be done from the firewall side in 60-90 minutes. If you prefer to do it from the interior it is 6-8 hours. Here is the link referred to by Jim.
