    194 valve heads on a 283"

What would a 283" with 1.94" double camel back heads and a "RV" cam (260 degree) be like compared to the stock set up of a 230 hp engine? The stock WCFB carb would be retained.

    Paul,

That combination would not gain anything. Double hump heads would only benefit the 283 at higher RPM and the RV cam will not go there.

Good performance is the result of putting together the correct set of parts that work well together. Carb, intake, heads, cam, exhaust, compression ratio, displacement. A lot of variables.

You need to define what you expect as "good" performance then talk to a good engine builder to see how to get there.

Others will chip in their thoughts.

I agree with Verle, but you really haven't stated what it is your after. Are you trying to out perform the stock 230hp or are you trying to duplicate it?

I'm trying to maintain or improve mileage but would not mind a little more performance out of the 230hp/PG set up. I have the low mileage heads and cam just sitting around. I was going to put on proper stock heads as the '61 has improper heads on it now and paint the silver intake orange. I do not plan on ever having it judged but would like to keep it looking original or at least be able to be easily converted back to stock if my kids wanted to do it in the future. One thought led to another hence the posting. I also have a '61 315hp FI I was considering installing but was wondering why PG was not offered with FI. Too high RPM or hp or torque for the PG to handle? Thanks for the feedback.

          Paul -

PG was offered with F.I., but only in '57-'58-'59, with a lower-horse hydraulic-lifter version (250hp).

            Paul,

You can get an aluminum powerglide built to handle the torque of the FI engine but unless you run a low gear (4.11 or so) you would not be happy with the performance and then you would not be happy with the mileage.

Good performance and good mileage are available with the modern electronic FI engines. A 90's LT1 engine is a pretty easy conversion and will give very good performance and mileage. Cheaper and easier install than the LS1 family.

If you want it to look mostly stock you will probably have to compromise on either performance or mileage.
