what are used C3 shocks worth?....

What would be a ballpark price to pay for a used set of C3 shocks that are working but are really just "good for show? I'm looking for a set for my 69 and not interested in numbers matching. I just want something that looks correct until you get close enough to read the date on them. I still have my original front ones but they only seem to be sold in sets of four so that is what I look at.

The reason that I'm asking is that I just got out bid on three good and one bad one on ebay. They were mid seventies and were not a matched set and my $75 bid didn't cut it. I thought that was reasonable but maybe I'm out of touch with these prices. There is also a nice and I believe matching set on ebay right now with a buy it now price of $250 which I thought was way high but maybe not for a good matching mid seventies set.

So now that I'm done whining about "loosing" the shocks what would be a fair price to pay for a set so that I know for the next time some come up?

I'm at a loss as to why you want to mess with used shocks if you don't care about matching numbers. Who gets down to look at shocks anyway? I would find a new set of Delco, or whatever brand you like, shocks that ride the way you want and enjoy the car. If you buy shocks used how do you know they are not trashed?
    Just my old 2 cents

Greg, Anyone correct me if I am wrong, but I think shocks are only total 8 raw points in judging. 4 for originality and 4 for condition. So with your original fronts you should potentialy get 4 out 8 if their condition is perfect. You can still get a 99.91% score. $250 divided by 4 = $62.50 per raw point..... Ouch... Get delco 'service' replacements and standard deductions kick in etc. Eric

They are worth more than you bid as a dealer bought them for resale. For that survior car original shocks may be worth big bucks. We all know no one would add them to their allmost perfect car.

You guys are all right in thinking that I'm crazy to put old shocks on a "new" car but they are only for "looking pretty" for judging and for pics before the body goes back on and nothing else. For driving I will be getting something much more modern!

I realized that a dealer bought them because he is the same one that is selling the matched set for $250. I could swear though that last year a "good" matched set could be picked up for around $100...maybe they have gone up that much. It would still be nice to find two good rears but like Eric says, that's a lot of money for a FEW points!

            That's ok... $281,875 car

I should talk. I once paid $80 for an oil filter. At $62.50 per point your restoration will cost $281,875.00 Just think of what great fire extingusher you could get for $187.50, but since NCRS sticklers are only a buck ($0.3333 per raw point) you could get a $374 halon ext. It is amazing what we normally reasonable people will do to be correct. As I touched on years before, I also apply this same sickness to non corvetts. I still have the old dried out vacuum lines from my 83 Chevy Beauville Van in hopes to restore it one day.... Does anyone know where I can get an NOS set of carpets for that van? Eric

If the dealer would have fell asleep in his easy chair or got busy working on a Corvette and not sniper bid you would have had that set for cheap so keep trying. I had them on my watch list but missed the closeing time for a honney do project or I may have got a chance on them to sell or use as they are worth more than the final price to some of us.

Re: what are used C3 shocks worth?....

Thanks for the heads up Lyle. I figured that he bought them with a sniper bid which is fine because as I understand it the sniper bidding won't work IF my final bid had been higher than the price that he set.

I was also thinking during the auction that I really only needed the two rear ones and with one being shot it wasn't really the set for me. Had the two rear ones been good and one or both of the fronts been shot I probably would have bid more.

For now I'll just keep looking....

You are correct the highest sniper bidder gets the part. Running up the price is all that happens early and if it goes high enough their will be no snipers. In the end on any rare part all the snippers put their bids in within the last ten seconds and whoever is high gets it. I put a opening bid of $300. which was the lowest the seller would take and when I got to Orlando loged on and found I bought the parts and was real susprised.

if understand how e bay works

if you bid the max you are willing to pay and if you are the highest bidder you only pay what the increments of the bidding above the closest highest bid. if you bid $100 and the bid increments are $5 and the closest bid to your bid is $60 you would pay $65. am i correct? if i am correct why not bid what you are willing to pay and save a lot of fretting. as you can tell i do not do e bay so enlighten me

Re: if understand how e bay works

We all want it for the lowest price. If you put you maximum in early it gives the "others" chance to bid it to that max. Say I want an oil filter. I am willing to pay $80 for it, but I really want it for $20. Some other crazy oil filter person may also want to pay $80 for it. If I get in early the other guy will bid it up. Now If I wait until the end, so called "sniping". The other guy may have only put in a $20 dollar bid thinking he will get it for a bargain. I step up bid with less then a minute to go and presto I get it for $22 (although I would have gone to 80). Eric
