    front shock id

When I bought my 69 coupe it was more or less taken apart, (still is) and many of the parts were in boxes. The car is a 69 427/400 with ac. Everything had been sitting since 1983, and as I started looking at stuff I found two front shocks. They are marked 4949705, pliacell, 302-71, and delco product. I assume that the 302-71 is a date code, but would like to know for sure and what it means. Thanks, Tom

    That's the 302nd day of 1971.

I do not believe that the dates are readable on the front unless you have it up on a lift. If the part #'s are correct the shocks should get no deducts.

        Tom-----

GM #4949705 is the part number for the PRODUCTION front shocks used for 1972 Corvettes with standard suspension. That is also consistent with the shock date code of the 302nd day of 1971 (October 30, 1971).

GM #4949705 was a one-year-only shock part number.

John,Dick, and Joe,thanks for the information. This makes sense to me now, as I bought a 72 coupe from the same guy at the same time. It was built in Dec. of 71, so I guess that these shocks might go with it instead of the 69. The shop I bought them from closed in 84, and he still has a ton of parts from that era, many still in their boxes. He gathered up parts from every area of his shop, as our deal was for everything that was corvette. These shocks could have been put in the wrong place 23 years ago, and his memory has faded since. Thanks again.
