      Thank you.It looked like a '385. It was hard to read.It must be the '383.

      The '63-'64 JG is not written clearly.It states the '421 is the first design used for '63-'64 production,but towards the end of '63 the '403 starts to appear.
      Does that mean both were used randomly?
      Then the early '403 was used for '64 and then late '64 the '383 appeared?

        Greg-----

        I don't think that the '403' was used for 1963. 1963 used the one-year-only '421' bellhousing. If any late 63's used the '403', then they would also have had to use the 1964 transmissions.

        I cannot say from any empirical evidence what bellhousings that 1964-65 Corvettes used. However, it would seem to me that the '383' would have been used for, at least, early 1964 and, if any '403's were used, at all, that would have happened later in the 64 model year. It may also be that the 2 bellhousings were used randomly and interchangeably for 1964 and early 1965.

        I can tell you one thing, for sure: the existence of the GM #3840383 preceded the existence of the GM #3858403. GM says that the 3840383 (known as GM PART #3840381) was used for 1964 Corvettes and that the GM #3858403 (known as GM PART #3858401 and, later, GM PART #3858403) was used for 1965-68. Whether that actually occurred just that way in PRODUCTION is something I do not know.

          Re: 64 Bellhousing

          A little more info;
          My Mar64 car (12,xxx) has the pn 3840381 showing the casting number of 3840383. According to Adams book 1964 car number 22,153 had the 383 also. I also received a copy of part number replacements that showed the 3840381 was to use the 3858401 as of 1-65. Also check past posting on subject around Jan 2, since Joe also covered the evidence in the Parts Manuals.

            Gentleman,

            My car April 7,1964 #16020 has the '383 bellhousing and with 45,000 miles on her it is evident that it was never removed.
            Hope this helps eveybody edification on the '64 timeline.
