    Exhaust install

Just got my exhaust system, aluminized steel pipes. While setting them in place, I find them to be a touch tight to slide easily together. I know they should not be loose but these require some real muscle to get in place. Can do while not threaded through frame, but under the car and throught the frame is another story. No jiggle room.

So, best way to open them up a bit? Grinder or an exhaust pipe expanding tool? Will the pipe expander do more than just get them back in the round? Opinions? Use expander and a torch?

Any cement used on joints? Tack weld after clamped?

    Thanks in advance.

An exhaust pipe expander will get you the additional clearance you need. I'd be very careful, though, that you don't over-expand the tube. You want just a "skoche" more clearance---NOT a loose fit. However, just applying a lubricant or anti-seize compound might get you enough friction reduction to accomplish what you want to do.

A sealer was originally used at the interface of the forward and rear pipes (i.e. at the crossmember joint). I don't know where you'd get this sealer today. However, I think that high temperature anti-seize compound will work just as well and have the other benefits I described above.

Thanks Joe, I'll try the anti-sieze as a first option. If that still does not get them to go together, I try the expander. They are close, but you are right, a touch too much friction for them to seat properly. Thanks!

          Mike,
Rather than using an expander there is a tool that looks like a large cone for truing the ends of the exhaust pipes. The tool has an inner and outer taper that is used depending on which half of the slip joint you are working on. Simply insert in the mouth of the pipe and give it a gentle whack with a hammer. The outer part of the joint is gently rounded and bell mouthed and the inner portion is rounded and slightly beveled at the mouth. Most times this small amount of truing can make the pipes slip together well. Pipes are typically damaged at the ends during shipping. Try to fit all of the parts together before you snake them through the frame, you will know ahead of time what to expect with the fitment then. There are some aftermatket exhaust cements available for use on the slip joints, Permatex used to make an exhaust cement we would employ on difficult to seal joints.

A company named Wurth makes an exhaust assembly paste that comes in a tube as a paste -- like tooth paste.

I am not necessarily recommending this source. I have never dealt with them. Just a picture to show the product. It may be available closer to you or at less cost elsewhere. Let your mouse do the walking. Internet search engines are a wonderful thing.

Thanks for the tip on that product. Funny, that company just buit a huge warehouse in Sparks, I'm about 3 miles away from it. Maybe they have a retail outlet there...

Or better yet, maybe they have a "factory outlet"
