    Partial Vin Stamp

Corvette by the numbers has me puzzeled as to the correct sequence for partial vin stamps on 1967 blocks and transmissions. The book states that the sequence should be year (7),S for St. Louis then the last six digits of the cars vin#. I have not seen a block stamped this way but have seen some trannys done this way.

Are the block and tranny partial vin stamps different?

    What is correct for each?

    Thanks, Howard

    Re: Partial Vin Stamp

    Howard -

The engine block VIN derivative starts with a "7" followed by the last six digits of the VIN, and the one on the transmission starts with "7S" followed by the last six.

Yes, different VIN derivative format in '67

The blocks would be 7123456 the trannys would be 7S123456.

Trannys in '63 thru '64 production used the same format as the engine case. Same for early 1965, up to about the end of the strike in Nov 1964, at which time the format was S123456 (yes, no 5 prefix) for the balance of the MY.

In 1966, the situation was 6123456 for the block and 6S123456 for the trans. But in early production there are some reports of the plant using the tranny stamp format (with the S) on the block.

By '67 they got it straight.

Where is the VIN derivative located on the 67 tranny?

            Here's a pic of location on a '65

Shot taken when car jacked up, lying on my back on the driveway, after cleaning off the surface of the known location, suffering a mouthfull and eyesfull of grit in the process.
