Is there suppost to be any silk screening of the air filter itself, I know there is on the top, or is the NCRS just focusing on the wire?

Re: 67 air filter
Keith-----
There was also "silk screening" or otherwise printed script on the top of the black "rubber" component of the air filter element. As far as I know, this is judged and needs to be period correct. I believe the original script was "BEST WAY TO PROTECT YOUR ENGINE--REPLACE WITH TYPE A 212 CW".In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 67 air filter
I was docked at the Florida meet for the silk screen because it read as you stated. The judge says it should only read "PROTECT YOUR ENGINE-REPLACE WITH TYPE A 212CW". I hope he was correct because I removed the "wrong wording" on a perfectly good $35 filter.- Top

Re: 67 AC A212CW air filter
Keith/Joe - I would not expect an "original" 1967 AC A212CW (or 1965 or 1966) or a "correct" reproduction to have the white silk screen wording on the black Plastisol of the air filter element. If it did have the white silk screen wording on the black Plastisol, it would also have either the AC A212CW in large outlined letters embossed on the Plastisol or have smaller letters with the filter model designation and AC SPARK PLUG embossed on the Plastisol.
The first version of the white silk screen lettering that to the best of my kowledge begain to appear on AC air filter elements maybe in late calendar year 1967 or sometime in 1968 read "BEST WAY TO PROTECT YOUR ENGINE - REPLACE WITH AC TYPE A212CW." The second version that read "PROTECT YOUR ENGINE - REPLACE WITH AC TYPE A212CW" probably appeared sometime in caledar year 1975. The white silk screened information is more commonly observed on the AC air filter with the vertical/horizonal square mesh hardware wire outer support and the nwere air filters with the diamond shaped spread metal outer support.

Re: 67 AC A212CW air filter
When I ran across this original element I was suprised to learn that there was no ink on originals, as many judges believe. Most judges that I judge mech with still insist on telling owners about removing the "Best way to" portion of the ink to make it more like originals. I guess it does to some degree. I have only seen a few originals and none had white ink on it...

Here is a side view. Note the wire and finished edges.

Re: 67 AC A212CW air filter
Nick - You're the man!!!!!!! Nice piece and excellent photos. The side view show how "elegant" the soldering was where the ends came together on the originals. Unfortunately, many of the '67 owners and judges have not seen the "real" thing. Hopefully they all see you post. Again, as I aways say "product knowledge" is a critical element to the hobby. Bottomline is, as far as I know is, no one is making reproductions like the real thing. In the case of original AC A212CWs I'm like Joe Lucia, they are not for sale. Pete- Top

Re: 67 AC A212CW air filter
I now know why air filter judging is not easy 67 judges say take the best way off, 73 judges say you need the best way ,81 judges say no best way. I now see why when their is a lack of judges at a chapter meet judging is not easy.

Re: 67 AC A212CW air filter
Kevin, you are correct. The deduct should be minimsed, especially when one considers the current value of pristine originals, and the availibilty of current (yuk) delco replacements... However that alone does not answer the original question and does nothing to educate those interested in authentic description of an original part.- Top
