Hi Guys, quick question - the vette i have is an early year and its color is black. I have taken off the windshield etc to find out if thats the real color and i cant find any other color.
1. Did they make this car in black?
2. Is there any color trim codes/date stamps to find the color?
The NCRS Judging Guide documents black exterior color in 1954 (#568), but other sources suggest this was a rare item. The Corvette Black book estimates the number built at FOUR with the following footnote:
"Exterior color quantities are not from Chevrolet records. These are estimates based on surveys, theories and other data. They should not be relied upon as precise quantities."
The film Kiss Me Deadly featured a black "souped up" '54 Corvette given to Mike Hammer as a deadly bribe, since it came with one bomb wired to the starter, and a second bomb wired to the speedometer, in the event he found the first bomb. The car was black. My Dad wanted to change his car to black after he saw it, then he saw one which had been resprayed black. Apparently, Chevy had to do special bodywork to the black cars, because the natural waviness of the 54 body looked really bad in black. This pic is from the film:
