    C1

I drive a C1 vette. I'd like to be able to take it out for a drive, park it, perhaps go to a movie or shopping and make sure its there when I get back. Any ideas on the best type of security system? Would tire boot work? How about installing a gps system (Iknow all atm machines have one in them to track them if they are stolen), would a shut off switch stopping the gas from going to the engine work? Thanks in advance

    Re: C1

I have a battery shut off switch which is attached to one of the battery posts. When you unscrew it a couple of turns, it disconnects the battery. You can further totally unscrew and remove the knob for added security. Just stick it in your pocket, then remember to screw it back on when it's time to move on. Short of towing or pulling your car onto a flatbed and hauling it away, it seems to be pretty fail proof (unless the crook has his own knob to screw on). In any event, it seems like just one of a few ways to keep the car from being stolen, but it is the least invasive and you can't tell from looking at the car that the battery is disconnected. Available in all parts catalogs.
    Hope it helps.

      Your asking for trouble

I like to drive my old Corvettes as much or more than the next guy but leaving it alone and un attended is asking for trouble. You may be able to keep it from being stolen but there are so many expensive and hard to get parts on these cars that are easily stolen it wouldn't be worth it. Also if you have collector insurance check your policy, a lot of carriers don't want the car left un attended. Don't mean to rain on your parade but I couldn't enjoy dinner or a movie knowing what might be happening in the parking lot. Rich

I take my Vette out for dinner with my wife all the time. Just park it near a window so you can see it while eating dinner. I wouldn't go to a movie with it, but out to eat is a fun idea. You can go tag sale-ing with the MRS too. Never have to leave the car alone, you get to drive around all day, and she gets to look at the junk for sale!
Best place to take your Corvette is to Corvettes at Carlisle. Put some serious highway miles on it, and just use it as transportation. You'll simply have the time of your life. I know I do!

You're out of luck if the vette is going to be towed, this is where a GPS/cell phone type of solution would come in.
Suggest a battery cutoff but a different style than what is typically offered, check out a boat shop as a cutoff is used when refueling boats . Who doesn't know about battery cutoff knobs?
There are a bunch of classic toggle switch/ cigarette lighter activated methods. A fake coil to cap wire is what I always used when going to the movies along with a fuel cutoff switch. A fuel cutoff is the best as it would appear the theif was home free but the car would die within a 1/4 mile.
If you stop for lunch, sit where you can see the car.
Back when these cars would be stolen or ravaged, the hardtop was the first to go. Rag tops would be sliced open to gain access. A friend always left his top down or a window open. With the animals running around today, damage for the sake of damage would be a concern.

Set guns are now illegal in all states, so that's out.

Stuff a potato up your exhaust.

Always thought to rig a speaker on a seperate battery, activated when the car was started. It would play a loud version of your favorite music which typically isn't played out loud. A tape of a rabbit in distress predator call or a bugling elk would also work. Don't think they are out on CD yet. Meant as an attention getter. You could also rig a strobe light to run the same way.

It used to be quite common to see pickup trucks wearing vette hubcaps, not saying they were stolen, but we've come a long way from the days of innocence where a big crime was stolen hubcaps to where we are today.
Location, location, location....if your car was stolen in West Barnett, VT they probably knew who stole it. If it was stolen from Newark, NJ you're out of luck.

            Click, click, click click, click,

If they stole that car of yours, it'd be easily traceable as long as it was rolling. Click, click, click click, click.

Lojack has a decent system, as long as the local law enforcement has the equipment. I have it in all my Vettes, but also know that the local police have it too.

                Dennis

The one thing you should consider is if a pro wants your parked car, it is gone and most classic car insurance companies will not pay for a stolen car parked in a mall or theater parking lot. The minute you leave it, it becomes uninsured. I know this will probably start a debate about what is covered and what isn't. Best advice is call your insurance company, do not talk to the receptionist, and get it in writing if they say it is covered while in a parking lot. Been there with a friend and have seen the grief.

Good advise Pasta! A good 400 mile 6 hr run to Carlisle sounds good right now. But id you really want dinner and a movie, I suggest a drive through and a drive-in (we still have one up here open from April to September).
