Re: Open letter to NCRS - Restorer Magazine

OK ! Mentioning my name will get you no wear , I and Noland were not to liked in NCRS when we started SACE and don't think they like seeing our names to much now! That's why we stay out of politics today. I have been able to post here and mostly enjoy that. I try to stay in the shadows now and don't need any recompilations . Any one can use what I post or what ever they wont to the Restorer but not me. When we wrote about how to find the paint color for C1's in the SACE ('book') called "Straight Talk" in the 80's ----well you figure that out!!

Re: Open letter to NCRS - Restorer Magazine

I agree. I have always liked the restoration , barn finds ,road to top flight, before & after, & history articles . I am guilty .The last time I had an article in the Restorer was when John was the editor . I also think we should go back to including the names & Vin.#s unless the owner requests them not used. Im glad G.M. gives us money. give them a full page add or two with the new Corvette , Tahoe or pick ups. We all know about the Z06. I always enjoyed reading Waynes articles in the other Magazines ,But lets keep the Restorer about Restoration and related topics....Bill Williamson..#3245

I don't like the slick new paper. It seems more flimsy. But maybe that is just me.

I agree that it looks like the Restorer is being changed and not for the better. Never read the 8 pages on the 2007 Corvette. It,s the same type article that will be in every Corvette magazine on every newstand in the country. The story about the stolen 1963 has been published before.
I like articles about project cars, barn finds, how to do repair things, VIN NUMBERS for cars and I also do not like the new paper in both the Restorer on Driveline.

According to Verle, Gilbert said ...

"Many of the articles submitted do not have the proper photos to go along with the written material. (Remember not too long ago folks were complaining about the fuzzy photos in the Restorer?)"

The change in the required quality of submitted photos is one thing that was instituted with the recent change in editor. I have to admit that some of my previous articles that were published in the Restorer had photos that were less than perfect. But I personally would rather read technical articles with slightly lower quality photos than some rehash of essentially a GM advertisement, which is what I consider the 2007 Corvette article in the latest issue to be.

If the quality of photos is limiting the number of acceptable articles, perhaps the image quality threshold can be reevaluated.

Sorry, Roy, I Love My C6 Too...

But, I don't need to read about it in The Corvette Restorer.

The first thing I did after joining the NCRS nearly sixteen years ago was buy all the back issues of The Corvette Restorer that I could buy from Cincinnati. I read them through as fast as I could, and gave myself an education about restoration of old Corvettes.

Future members will not have the same opportunity with The NEW Corvette Restorer. There are some restoration articles, but we need to keep the primary emphasis on high quality articles by NCRS members about projects in the judged years, and not about the latest product on the showroom floor. In my opinion, it will be a mistake for the organization to continue down this path with The Corvette Restorer.

I agree and now having to cover C1 to C4's people will get less and less info about any year Corvette with so many year Corvettes to cover. Then the C5 will be coming on line before you know it!!

Re: According to Verle, Gilbert said ...

Isn't there a requirement for NCRS members to publish an article for some awards?

What happens if they try to publish, but get rejected for "amateur picture" quality? Do they then have to resubmit, write a new article (may not access to take the photos again), get partial credit for the attempt, or simply lose out?

Admittedly, we like the look of a professional magazine. Who doesn't, it is something to be proud of when people comment how good it looks. But most of the membership are not professional writers or photographers. As such, articles will always have a certain feel to them.

That is where the editor comes into his own, either by helping the writing (that is why they are called an editor - editing), or getting someone else to help. The pictures are just too bad, unless NCRS gets a staff photographer to go out to anyone doing a project that may turn it into an article.

Maybe a good article would be on how to take the pictures for an article.

Yes, one of the requirements for the Founders Award is the acceptance of an articlel for the magazine.
