Roy-- you dont think that anyone is watching your posts but we are. I never did acknowledge it but we did the carburator fix to stop our 55 from stalling on the left turns two years ago that you had outlined. The stalling was dangerous in the traffic in Florida and it was also a PITA It worked --never had that problem since. . Belated thanks. Keep em coming . In addition to being a nice person You are a non renewable resource and a credit to this board in particular and to the hobby as well. Thanks a bunch

      Roy,

You picture of the slotted screw probably leave some to wonder why the General used these type screws on the fiberglass in the Corvettes. I sometimes wondered also as worked on the cars.

At the plant we had different methods of securing parts that where held on by screws in the fiberglass.
The first and most correct was to drill a hole and then driving the screw tight.
The second was to use an air gun with a Phillips bit, sometimes ground flat and pointed, to make the hole before attaching the point.
The third was to drive the screw into the fiberglass making your hole as you went.

These methods where used depending on the ability of the screws to do their job while taking short cuts to get done faster or save cost. The biggest problem with the earlier cars was that the operators did not toque controlled air guns like they do today. The screws would hole through the build process but after being taken loose for any reason they would strip. I know because of the different Corvettes I have had and worked on.

I mention this because I know that there are members out there who had to fill the holes with some fiberglass to get a screw to hold and I am sure where wondering why.

Just my 2 cents to add to your post.

        Re: More trivia "Don"

The reason I believe the screws were slotted like you see (from normal looking screws) is the holes were first drilled then the screw when using one in a new drilled hole you'll see it cutting the glass hole larger as it self taps ( threads ) it self into the glass.%99 of Corvette screws were used as shown.
