    1965 vette horn button

Hi guys. The Horn button with the crossed flags clips onto a metal disk (for want of a better word) which screws down onto the steering wheel center. Now this produces a constant ground to the brass pickup button. which in turn will operate the horn relay, constantly if something is not insulating the metal disk from the pickup button. What am I missing here . it seems to me that 3 small springs under the disc would do the trick Am I correct ??

    Thanks for any information.

It sounds as if the clip assembly that secures the button to the wheel is bad. It is held to the wheel by three screws. They are available from corvette suppliers.

Gene, Thank you for the quick responce. My clip is secured to the steering wheel shaft by 3 oval head philips screws. That would make the clip grounded.
As the clip has a finger pointing down onto the brass button and is touching the button that makes the button grounded which will sound the horn. How does pushing on the horn button with the 2 flags on it sound the horn?

When pushed the connection to ground is made. The plastic insulative part of your clip is missing or worn allowing ground thru all the time. That is why my first suggestion (without actually seeing it) is to replace the clip assembly. Check it with an ohm meter to see if it's good or not. Another thought is the metal could be fatigued and continuous grounding. This is the case if the horn is quiet with the button off but sounds with it on.

Gene, Thanks for staying with me. I can see plastic buttons sticking through the clip, but there does not seem to be any plastic elsewhere. What does the plastic part look like./

Re: Sound like it could be a horn contact insulato

              THANK YOU Geofrey,

I took the clip apart, CAREFULLY and found the card stock separator was OK . It almost looks new. But the spiral spring did not have enough offset to it . So after a little judicious bending here and there I got that part working the way it should, But after installing and ringing it out with an ohmeter the problem now appears to be deeper down in the colunm. That will have to wait until Monday, Car show tomorrow, in Estero Florida.

              Thanks agian.
