    1954 Corvette

I have a good chance to buy a 1954 Red Corvette (VIN #152 last three digits)with 26,000 original miles. The car has been repainted and the seat covers and carpet replaced and that's it. Everything else is original. Now the problem !

A person told me emphatically NOT to get that car because it rides rough, has no HP, is hard to get in and out, and has a very hard to take care of engine.

Anybody support or eny those claims? Anybody love the 54's?

    Always appreciate your thoughts, THANKS

Although mine is a '55, I have to agree with the earlier post. The car is easy to work on, I have never had a problem getting into it and I'm not a small person. It rides like an older car, so don't expect a super smooth ride. Making sure the suspension is well maintained and lubed takes some of that problem away. As far as the HP goes, I don't know how fast you'd want to go in a car without seat belts and roll bars anyway... I'm in the middle of a resto on mine, but when I did drive it, I had a blast. Pulling into a gas station always starts a conversation and the rubber necking that results while driving through town is well worth the lack of modern creature comforts. Hey, it is a 50 + year old car, what can you expect in tech? I would not give up my '55 for any other car.

My 55 is always a pleasure to drive smooth and quite and the seats are bigger then any C1, I love the sound that the 54 makes . Buy it!

of all our vettes(c-1's and c-2's) our ole 54 is the smoothest riding of the bunch. as far as power goes, its not comparable to the sbc and bbc vettes but it'll get ya there and maintainence is no problem.mike

            Sounds

like "a person" has "a personal" problem with classic cars.

"A person told me emphatically NOT to get that car because it rides rough
-I have Delco gas shocks on mine and it rides real smooth.

            has no HP
            -Compared to what, exactly?

is hard to get in and out
-Well, I hear John Wayne had a tough time with that. It's all relative.

and has a very hard to take care of engine.
-I guess he never actually worked on one.

Look, the car is a show-stopper wherever it goes. It's the only car I know of where you can see the taillights from inside the car. You don't drag race these cars (well, actually I have for laughs) but you would be guaranteed to draw a crowd at any cruise night. Anybody can throw money at a modern car and go fast, very few can pull up to the sock hop in one of these babies. I once drove mine to a 50's club, and the manager insited I park on the sidewalk by the front door, both so the bouncers could keep an eye on it, and draw a crowd :o)
