    timing marks

I am installing a new timing chain, cam sprocket and crank sprocket. do the marks on both sprockets go together (facing each other) or does the cam sprocket dot stay on top when the at #1 TDC. the engine is a small block and the timing set is a cloyes 9-3100. thanks

OK, now I see it's exactly what I thought; I don't know how your response got "displaced" from the original thread. Anyway, as I described above, when you have the engine with the timing sprocket marks aligned, you will be at the firing position (TDC) of the #6 cylinder. Knowing this, after you have the engine assembled with the balancer on, you should see that the timing mark on the pointer is aligned with the timing mark on the balancer. But, as I say, you are at the firing position of the #6 cylinder. So, you rotate the engine exactly 360 crankshaft degrees (one full turn of the balancer), line up the timing marks, and you'll be at the firing position of the #1 cylinder.

By the way, you used absolutely the correct timing set. The Cloyes 9-3100 is the only set I recommend for small blocks; it's absolutely the best thing going. However, one thing that you need to be careful of is that the Cloyes set has different keyway positions for installation of the crank sprocket so that valve timing can be advanced or retarded. This affects which of the marks that you line up on the 2 sprockets, so be very careful that you get this the way you want it or you'll have problems. I always use the stock position.

With a stock GM set or stock replacement you can't get it wrong because there are no optional keyway positions.

        Joe,

Hi, thanks for all the info. I am installing the kit this afternoon and ill try to get it correct. im using this kit per your recommendation from all the posts i read. i have the intake off so it should give me a good look at the lifters. By the way im putting an LT1 cam in and using John/Dukes formula for the valve lash as of 12/15/05. Along with new springs, retainers, push rods and lifters all stock stuff thanks to all who have given up their time so freely to this board.
