    C2 engine assembly sequence question

At our local chapter event, we talked about the sequence of engine assembly for C2's. A friend of mine who has a December 1966 (67 model) convertible, questioned the sequence of when the engine stamping pad was stamped in relationship to when the heads were bolted onto the engine. His heads are dated about three days after the stamping date stamped on his stamping pad. His car's assembly date though is about 2 weeks after the date on his engine's stamping pad.

Is it possible that the engine stamping date shown on the bare block's engine stamping pad could predate the casting date of his heads?

    Thanks.

Were big block pads stamped before the heads went on? I seem to recall that from somewhere??

Re: C2 engine assembly sequence question

The entire engine manufacturing process from the time the block was machined until it was completed took hours, not days. Heads also required machining and assembly prior to being bolted onto the block, so it is a big stretch to find a "real world" scenario that would allow the heads to have been cast AFTER the engine assembly date. Same day is possible, but not after.

All small-block pads were stamped after the heads went on, and all big-block pads were stamped BEFORE the heads went on.

            John,

What about engine rework? If the engine went to rework is it possible the heads were switched with another rework engine?

              Verle -

Almost anything was possible in off-line major repair in the engine plants, including pad grind-out, partial or full restamp, reconfiguring requiring suffix change, etc. I'm just addressing the normal production flow.
