I was wondering if there is a website or a special investigative source that can research VIN numbers for previous ownership. I am looking for information on a 1968 Corvette. Thank you. Don.

Re: VIN search
Don
For older cars it is pretty hard to do a vin search for two reasons;
one most states don't keep records that far back and two with the privacy act even if they did have the records you probably could not see them.

Re: VIN search
Check this site out from a registry standpoint. Maybe you can find your VIN Number here.

Re: VIN search
Looks interesting...
Have contacted a couple of DMV's in the past and ran my car's VIN - didn't learn anything new. Tried to sign up for this service and couldn't because I am in Canada. If anyone is signed up and would be willing to run my VIN - would be much appreciated.- Top

The "services " can't do any more than you can. Since the Privacy Act was passed it's really hard to track the history of an old car. That and the fact a lot of states don't keep vin records for more than about 10-15 years, makes it darn near impossible to track the history.

Re: VIN search
Thought I'd try public data.com. Tried their demo search. Unless I'm reading this all wrong, they had a listing for my car in every state that had records! I'm sure I'm confused on how to interpret this. Can you advise? Thanks.- Top

Re: VIN search
At the top of the demo page it says "Actual Data Not Shown During Demo".
When I tried it, it showed asteriks in all the fields. This means nothing except to show the type of data if will provide to paying customers. Click any state radio knob you want...it still provides the same asteriks; doesn't mean your car was ever registered in the state.- Top
