Since my steering is out with my '55 rebuild, I'd like to check the box and rebuild if needed. I know someone was already in the box in the past, there is no gasket on the cover. What would I look for in wear? Also, is this somethiong best left to a professional or can a owner with fairly good wrench skills take on this porject? Since the car is apart, I'm going over every component. This is one of my last pieces to look at and I have been leary on opening the box. Thanks. Mike

Re: C1 steering box rebuild
Mike
The ST-12 service manual gives good detail on how to adjust the box, try that first. Kits are available to rebuild it yourself. If you want it done, Joe Calagno (831-475-4442) for one does it. You realize that the whole steering column has to come out with the box, it does not seperate at the box like newer cars.

Re: C1 steering box rebuild
Thanks Terry, my column is out, removed with the body off, so that is no issue. I have the ST-12 and have read the section, I am always hesitant to work on the unknown, was that way with the king pin replacement until I tackled it, that was easy. Same with the distributor rebuild... Thanks, I'll give it a go! Mike- Top

Give it a go, you'll be surprised about your own skills. It is a job which can be done very well by a avarage restorer. For some pictures of what to expect see my weblog (link below)...
