    003 '53

In one of the threads ,Dale P. mentions about 003 '53. I couldn't help thinking about the story in the Restorer, about the car being found in Calif. But, a frame being found in Mich. that was stamped 003. If there was a follow up to that story, I missed it.When they pulled the body off of the Calif. car what ser. no. did they find there? Someone fill me in.

This is technically the first production model, isn't it? I thought 1 and 2 were destroyed... STW, Mike

      002 is still alive...

      Oh boy, those facts!

I remember from 'old' Corvette Fever stories that the XP120/XP122(?), the earliest Vette with a V8 engine, was actually '53 002... Tough decision, the oldest Corvette, or the oldest Corvette with a V8... This Vette was on display during the NCM 5th anniversary last year.

The Motorama Vette (call it '53 000) was stripped and the chassis was used under the '54 Vette Nomad. This car was destroyed aftwerwards. A very early body, I'm not sure it was the Motorama or the 001 body, was used in burn tests... AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!! It burned very well...

These facts were confirmed by people 'who know' and are also documented.

Henri 'One day I'll own a '53-'55...' Kroeze, '79, the Netherlands.

        Re: 002 is still alive...

I was up at Classic Corvettes in Tarpon a few weeks back...they had not one, or 2, but three 53's in their shop being restored!! Most I've seen at one time, including Carlisle. It would be nice to own one, not for driving value perhaps, but just for the historical importance. STW, Mike

I do remember that the Restorer had a story on XP122 in I think '77 or '76.If you like i will look it up for you. But, I do remember the story of how Ed Theubold who owned 003 sold it and how in the restoration process frame no 003 came to light in Mich. and I always wandered what frame did body no. 003 sit on? What, body was on frame no. 003 in Mich.?

001 &002 are dead 003 lives! So does spare frame

John Amgwert, one of the owners of 003, did a wonderful story for Restorer Magazine about three or four years ago in which he explains the "extra" frame as well as what happened to 001 & 002. I can't recall the issue and am too busy running my mouth on discussion board to look it up. There are stories and rumors resulting from article but I'm unfamiliar with them. I attended the Auction at Monterey California in 1987 (?) where John found the car for Les Bieri and Howard Kirsh. They made him a partner. Was this the 53 whose owner buried in the ground to avoid loosing it in a divorce?

Dale, as I recall yes! That is the one buried. I remember a Corvette News in I think '69 that had a story on the Theubold family and their love of Corvettes. Then of course that story about John A. and the restoration of 003.I remember the story of the purchase and resto.but, never the rest of the story. Actually I thought the events took place in the mid '80's, but you know what they say. The brain is the second thing to GO, I forgot what was 1st.I would gladly look it up myself I just don't recall an ending to the story.

Dave, Your right , there was a Restorer article in the 80s about a 55 restoration that when taken off the chassis revealed frame 003 as well as some cobbled up home made V8 mounts. Ed Thiebud still owned 003 at the time and was asked to look for a frame stamping but wouldn't do it. I'm not sure what year the article was published but it was the 80s. Rich #2276

                          002 lives

                          Dale,

This same story confirmed, as Henri mentions, that 002 was turned into the car commonly known as EX-122 and living in upper New York state (can't remember the owner off hand, but we've all seen the car). The EX-122 car is NOT the same as the original Motorama car, as had been thought.

I thought the EX-122 was an assembleledge of left over test parts and not generally recognized as the oldest surviving Corvette. Amgwert addresses this point in his article. If I ever get away from this keyboard, Ill pull out his article and re-read it. I'm SURE that I'm NOT sure about anything!
