From time to time I have collected 68 corvette distributor boxes/shields. Mainly I was doing this to find a very nice box and improve the one that I had. What I think I observed is that all 68 boxes used aluminum rivets to hold the grounding strap in place. Also, the rivets were sort of crudely set. Typically, the head will have a smash mark running across it and the back is sort of smashed over as if an improper tool was used to set the rivet. This style seems to be up into 69 and then sometime in 69 or 70 the rivet became steel and chrome plated. After that I don't know what happens. The lids all had the same clear nylon/plastic rivets in 68/69 from what I can tell. The boxes and lids will have very thin chrome and you will see mold markings/sheering lines in the sheet metal from being formed. I believe the weld nuts were attached differently on the original lids compared to the reproduction. Just my humble opinion. The rivet thing is the main observation though and I think it should be judged. That is all folks! Terry

Terry, your comment is noted in the items to be looked at for the next update of the 68-69 TIM & JG

Re: Observation of 68 distributor shield box...
I have noticed a lot of small differences for 68s, I bought a parts car that was built a few weeks after the car I'm restoring, and many of the original parts are different between these two cars. I love my 68, and I don't mind looking harder for "68" only items, but I think some of this would be very hard to judge with so many small differences.
Cheers,
