    evaporator canister serviceable

Is the fuel evaporator canister serviceable or do I need to buy a replacement? If the latter, does anyone know where can I find one?

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Re: evaporator canister serviceable

    Steve-----

The only part of the cannister that I know is serviceable is the filter section. However, the filter is GM discontinued and I don't know of any other source for it. It's possible that someone here that's been involved in one of these things can suggest some method for rebuilding the canister that I'm unaware of.

The complete cannister assembly is still available from GM under GM #17063011 for about 65 bucks, GM list. However, this is a "3rd generation" supercessive part number and the unit will undoubtedly be configured somewhat differently than the original. It should be 100% functional, though.

That's also a typo. Should be an "s" and not an "a" in my 4th word, 2nd sentence.

Oh how I wish we could edit....

          For what it's worth...

I've always understood these basically don't go bad. You need only worry about proper connection, and of course appearance if it's a show car.

The charcoal doesn't wear out, and a few years ago I bought a Purolator filter that looks identical to the original at Pep Boys for about a buck and a half (for my Cosworth Vega). Sorry, I don't have the number, but it should be in the Purolator catalog. GM made millions of these canisters in the seventies, and they were all basically the same.

Unless it is damaged just restore the external finish, replace the filter, and it should be good for another 35 years.

In stock at Wal-Mart for even less money and you get 3-4 filters in a single package! The white cloth filter was intended to be replaced once a year or so to keep the filter assembly breathing freely. But, few bother to do the maintenance required...

The charcoal does NOT wear out, as others have suggested. Just change the cloth filter on a regular basis any you're good to go!

                  Re: evaporative canister serviceable

The maintenance section in my 1974 Vega service manual calls for changing the evap canister filter every 24 months or 24,000 miles, and I expect most other model lines had the same service recommendation.

I recall many years ago I couldn't readily find a new one, so I just washed the original in soapy water, rinsed, and let it dry out. Seemed good as new.

OK, now I know of a source for it. Good 'ol Doc has come up with another item that GM abandoned. Why didn't I think of him?

                      No problem.

I KNOW that you have more than 1 copy of his catalog to check, if needed.
