    '74 Windshield Washer Pump Rebuild

Now that I have been able to rework the wipers to keep them from running off the windshield I'm trying to get the washers to work. I've replaced the washer hoses from the reservoir to the pump and the o-rings and valves in the three-port plastic enclosure. If I prime the pump it will make a feeble effort to work while making a loud clunking sound. Without priming it just clunks when activated.

The Haynes Manual states the pump can be removed from the wiper motor and "individual components of the pump or valve assembly replaced as necessary". I have not been able to find anyone selling a rebuild kit for the 1974 pump, only kits for the valve assembly which I have already rebuilt. Other years are available so the '74 pump may be unique.

Does anyone know a source for the '74 pump rebuild kit?

    Thanks, Bill

There was a post on this subject just a few weeks ago you may want to look it up. One person went to the salvage yard and got some pistons with a o-ring that would work. One person put teflon tape under the old o-ring. The pump removes by pushing in and turning 1/4 turn.

Does fluid get sucked into the pump? If not, the problem is that the seal in the piston/cylinder is not sealing. The seal itself cannot be removed or replaced, however, I have found that by putting an o-ring under the seal, it will press up against the wall of the cylinder and seal thereby suck the fluid in and shove it out. You need to get the piston as far out to the front as possible. The front of the piston comes off as Lyle said by pushing it in and twisting. The top of the piston and a spring will come out. The seal shoud be right there. Experiment with different sizes of o-rings (common everyday plumbing o-rings are fine). Just slip one under the seal and put it back in the cylinder. And hope for the best! Let us know if this works.
