1967 Fan, AC, Alternator Belt Replacement

I own a 1967 327/300HP automatic with AC, power steering and power brakes. How hard is it to replace all the belts on the car? Does anyone have a good site or step-by-step instructions of what I need to do? Thanks.

Kirk, Just follow the procedure in the 1967 Chassis Service Manual, also, the Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) has a good illustration of the routing of the individual belts near the back of the manual. If you do not have these manuals, I suggest you get them (available from the NCRS store on this website) as they will pay for themselves a hundred times over.

Got them both. Just wondered if there were any of those intangible tidbits of experience out there that might help. Thanks.

        Don,

Was just thimbing through the Chassis Service Manual and didn't really see a specific section dedicated to belts. Did I miss it? Is it embedding in several different chapters?

Kirk, The belt procedures are covered under the sections dealing with the component the belt(s) drive, eg. P/S belt R&R and tensioning is covered in the chapter on power steering, etc, etc. Begin with removing all the belts starting with the outermost belt. Be sure to use the correct size belts and properly tighten them- the most critical part of the job. Reverse the procedure to install.

            Don,

I read in the service manual that there is such a thing as a belt tension tool - should I get one of those to check the tension on the belts??? If so, are they readily available at auto stores and where do I find the proper tension settings? In the service manual? Thanks.

Kirk, It would be nice to use it to check proper belt tension. I wish I had one. I guess they are still available at better auto supply stores that sell professional equipment. You don't really need one though, with experience, you can tell by the amount of "deflection" of the belt at its center, between the two pulleys, if the belt is tight enough (should be about .5"). The specs for belt tension are found either in the appropriate section as I mentioned before or in the Specifications section of the manual in the back of the book. But only usefull if you have a tension guage.
              I generally just "SWAG" it.
