    Identifying a '78 TH 350

As I'm preparing my Silver Anniversary for it's first judging this summer, I've been making a list of all the "matching numbers." Until now, I thought the car was very original.

I have been trying to find some ID on the transmission. There is no date or ID code on the passenger side and no VIN on the driver's side. The only information is cast into the driver's side of the case. It has a circle divided into 3 quadrants containing the following: 2-78, 13, and 3 dots. There are also 3 lines of numbers: 110214-A, 8640300, 50.

Since the build date on the car was Jan 11, 1978, I assume the 2-78 is a casting date and that this is a replacement transmission, possibly done unde warranty. An help or ideas in deciphering this info is appreciated.

    Greg.

Greg, I am not sure about the dates and or stamps but if the 2-28 13 stamp is a februrary 13th of 78 date that seems very close to the build date. I know that's AFTER the build date but Maybe, just maybe, the transmission was faulty at the factory and replaced there. There are records of cars with wide variations in date codes (including build dates that pre-date a particular casting) and the car is still factory correct. Just a thought, either way it's going to take alot more research. The dates just seem awfully close to me despite being in th wrong order.

Bill, It's an interesting thought, but I have been able to research the original sale (although no luck contacting the first owner.) I have a copy of the original CA registration. It shows date sold as 1/27/78 and date registration issued as 3/16/78. I was thinking that the trans may have been replaced in the first few months of ownership.
