Re: Is anyones elses computer acting up today?
Doc,
Is it possible that your computer has a virus?
If you want a free virus scan (it can't hurt), go to www.antivirus.com or www.trendmicro.com, and follow the instructions for their free "HouseCall." The site belongs to Trend Micro, one of the major antivirus software companies (along with Symantec/Norton and McAfee). Follow the directions to do a free virus scan and disinfection of your computer. Even if you already have antivirus software, it may not be up-to-date, and even if it is, not all antivirus software catches all viruses.
Other software companies that will provide a similar free service are Panda ( www.pandasoftware.com, look for "ActiveScan" ) and Grisoft ( www.grisoft.com, look for AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5 ). In fact, Grisoft is the only one that will allow you to install free software that will allow active monitoring and protection, albeit without certain bells and whistles that their purchased software contains, as opposed to a simple on-demand scan like the others. The marketing strategy with all of them is, if you like their free service, you might subscribe to (i.e., pay for) their full-blown product.
Good luck!
Louis
PS - Of course, in addition to viruses, you also have to worry about spyware installed on your PC, which could also affect performance, but that's another discussion. For a couple of solid free products, go to www.lavasoft.com (look for Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition 1.06) and www.spybot.info (look for Spybot - Search & Destroy). I have both installed and run them periodically (they work well).
E-mail me if you need more info...- Top
